Shillong, May 25: As part of its ongoing public outreach initiatives, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, organised a special awareness programme at Kyntiew Shaphrang Higher Secondary School, Laitlyngkot on Friday. The event was conducted under Swachhata Hi Seva, Poshan Abhiyan, and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam to foster environmental consciousness, nutritional health, and civic responsibility among students and the community.

This programme is a part of CBC Shillong’s continuous campaign to strengthen grassroots-level awareness and citizen participation through information, education, and communication activities.

Dr. L. Jaba, Medical Officer and In-charge of Laitlyngkot PHC, explained the spiritual and environmental essence of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative. “Planting a tree in honour of our mothers is a powerful gesture of love and environmental responsibility,” he said. Dr. Jaba also spoke on Poshan Abhiyan, emphasising nutrition as the foundation for a healthy, productive life. “Malnutrition is a silent crisis. Let us act together to build a healthier India through proper nutrition and hygiene,” he urged. He emphasised the role of children, mothers, teachers, and healthcare workers in creating a “well-nourished and healthier India.” On the theme of Swachhata Hi Seva, he invoked the enduring wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi, stating, “Gandhiji believed that cleanliness is more important than freedom. Today, we must honour his vision through action—beginning with ourselves, our homes, and our schools.”

Smt.. O. Sumer, District Health and Education Officer, East Khasi Hills District, delivered an informative session on the dietary needs of adolescents. She focused on enhancing nutrient value through proper cooking, the importance of micronutrients, and prevention of anaemia through regular WIFS (Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation). “Students must learn to enjoy food and understand its value—not just eat to fill hunger,” she said.

Smt. Anie Swer, Block Coordinator, Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin, Khatarshnong C&RD Block, Laitkroh, spoke on the importance of collective responsibility in achieving cleanliness. “Swachh Bharat is not just a campaign—it’s a mission that depends on collaboration,” she said. She urged students to work hand-in-hand with school teachers, families, and local bodies to maintain clean surroundings and ensure the mission’s impact reaches every corner of society. To reinforce the message of hygiene, she also demonstrated the 7 steps of effective handwashing, engaging the students in a hands-on activity that emphasised personal cleanliness and disease prevention.

Shri Longshisha Shabong, Principal of Kyntiew Shaphrang Hr Sec School, welcomed all dignitaries and thanked CBC Shillong for bringing such a meaningful programme to the school. He emphasised the school’s commitment to integrating these values into everyday student life.

Shri Gopajit Das, Assistant Director, CBC Shillong, delivered the concluding remarks, praising the enthusiastic participation of students and staff. “This programme demonstrates how awareness can be turned into action at the grassroots level. The energy of the youth here today is proof that small actions can lead to significant change,” he said, urging students to be ambassadors of cleanliness, health, and sustainable practices.

As part of the engagement activities, the programme featured an Art Competition on themes of cleanliness, hygiene, and nutrition, along with a lively Quiz Competition that tested students’ knowledge on health, environmental care, and national campaigns. These interactive events encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and active learning. Winners were recognised with certificates and prizes, inspiring others to take part and learn through participation.

The program concluded with all participants pledging to uphold cleanliness, promote good health, protect nature, and contribute to building a better India.
