Shillong, Nov 8: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to follow up with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) with regards to the pending KHAD (Village Administration) Bill 2015.

This decision was taken during an Executive Committee meeting of the ruling People Democratic Forum (PDF) here on Wednesday.

The follow up will be either by sending a representation to the MHA or by constituting a team of MDCs along with officials where a delegation will visit New Delhi to seek clarification on the status of the VAB.

The KHAD (Village Administration) Bill 2015 was passed by the KHADC to empower the traditional institutions and their heads within the jurisdiction of the Council.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, KHADC chief executive member, P.N. Syiem said, “The executive committee has decided to take the responsibility of following up the matter without waiting for the state government which has taken things very lightly in the past two years.”

Syiem informed that the KHADC had already submitted its replies on the 12-point queries raised by the MHA to the state government.

“It is the duty of the state government to follow up the matter with the MHA but unfortunately, till today, the state government has not even informed the KHADC about the status of the VAB,” he said.

Several protests were launched by the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH) demanding immediate passage of the Village Administration Bill to become an Act.
