Shillong, Nov 29: Independent legislator from Rongara-Siju constituency Rophul S. Marak has decided to withdraw support from the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) government.

The decision came days ahead of the last and final Assembly session of the current ninth Assembly session scheduled to be held on December 8, 13 and 14.

Marak is the second Independent MLA to withdraw support from the Mukul Sangma-led government, after Independent MLA from Mookaïaw constituency, Robinus Syngkon who had also withdrawn support from the government a few weeks ago.

Both Marak and Syngkon were earlier appointed as parliamentary secretaries by the chief minister.

However the Meghalaya High Court in its judgment on November 9, has declared the law related to the appointment of parliamentary secretaries as “invalid.”

Marak said that he has decided to withdraw support from the MUA-II government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma due to his failure to consider many proposals related to development of South Garo Hills district.

The proposals include the demand for a civil administrative unit at Nongalbibra and shifting of Baghmara community & rural development (C&RD) from municipal area to rural area.

Marak also alleged that under the present state government, there was lack of development in the entire South Garo Hills district

When asked if he would contest from a political party, Marak who won in the 2013 Assembly elections as Independent, said that he would still prefer to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in 2018 as independent candidate.
