Shillong Jan 9: The North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) led by United Liberation Front of Asom’s (Ulfa) pro-talk faction’s general secretary, Anup Chetia will open its chapter in Meghalaya soon, and three organizations which will be part of the forum would observe a ‘black flag day’ on January 11 here in protest against the NDA government for passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.
The NEIPF Meghalaya chapter will comprise of the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People, Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front and Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation.
Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People president and NEIPF convener, Wellbirth Rani told reporters on Wednesday that the Meghalaya chapter would be formed soon, and under this banner, a conglomerate of organizations would observe the ‘black flag day’ from 9 am to 3 pm.
Rani said that as part of the protest, effigies of the BJP and the Citizenship Amendment Bill would be burnt on the day, and termed the passing of the Bill a “political agenda†of the BJP.
He also asked the Meghalaya government not to satisfy only in making mere statement, but should show more aggressive actions against the Bill, while also demanding a special session of the Meghalaya Assembly to discuss and adopt a resolution to oppose the bill.
On the Meghalaya cabinet decision taken on May 8 last year to officially oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Rani said that this was not enough and the state government put more pressure even by protesting against the bill in New Delhi.
