Shillong, June 30: BSF troops deployed at Hat Thymmai in East Khasi Hills district recovered two Gold biscuits weighing 100 gms each worth more than 6.5 lakhs from a plastic packet smuggled from Bangladesh to India.

The BSF said that troops first saw some suspicious movement of a person who entered from Bangladesh into India in the area along the International border.

When BSF party on duty challenged him to stop, he did not halt and ran back with full speed towards Bangladesh.

The BSF troops tried to nab the suspected smuggler, and a packet fell on the ground which the smuggler tried to retrieve but he could not due to swift action by BSF troops.

The suspected person escaped to Bangladesh taking advantage of darkness and thick vegetation in the area.

On searching the area, two Gold biscuits weighing 100 gms each worth more than Rs 6.5 lakh were recovered from a plastic packet. The seized items were handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.

“It seems that these Gold biscuits are being smuggled from Bangladesh to Indian territory in lieu of cattle. It’s a significant and praiseworthy effort by BSF as such trend is just initial stage in Meghalaya,” the BSF said

The BSF has stepped up its special drive against smugglers and intensified its operations along the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminal in bordering areas of Meghalaya.
