Shillong, Sept 26: Independent candidate, Shembhalang L Chyne said that dynasty politics will not work in Shella in the upcoming bye election to be held on October 21, while slamming that Shella constituency has no development in the past 30 years.
Chyne who was earlier with the BJP, told reporters on Thursday that he decided to contest as an Independent candidate after understanding that the BJP would not field any candidate.
He said that he had approached the party for ticket, but it appeared that the BJP would not put up its candidate.
The 41-year-old businessman from Mawlong village completed his graduation from St Anthony’s College, Shillong.
According to Chyne, he came forward to contest this bye election to win, and the people of Shella do not believe in dynasty politics.
The bye election to Shella constituency is required following the death of sitting MLA, Dr Donkupar Roy.
Dr Donkupar who represented Shella constituency for seven consecutive terms since 1988, passed away on July 28.
Asked if sympathy will work in favour of Dr Donkupar’s son, Balajied Synrem, who is the UDP candidate, Chyne said, “Whether sympathy will work or not, it depends on the voters of Shella and wisdom of the candidates who are the servants of the people.
Chyne said that he would file his nominations on Monday.
“I join the fray with confidence to win, and I will work hard to win,†he said.
On the demand that Sohra civil sub-division should be upgraded into a district, Chyne said that in his opinion, creation of new district without infrastructure would be a futile attempt to bring administration closer to the people.
“Before creating a district, we first have to ensure that infrastructure is in place,†he said.
Asked about development in Shella constituency during the tenure of Dr Donkupar as MLA for 30 years, the Independent candidate said, “There is total lack of development in the constituency especially with regard to road connectivity. There will be no change if our remote areas are not connected by road.â€
He also lamented that the NEC has sanctioned Rs 47 crore for the construction of the important road from Mawsmai to Shella, but sadly, it was not as per the aspiration of the people.
Stating that his aim is to empower the youth and women in the constituency, Chyne assured to come up with innovative ideas to create sustainable development and employment.
“There are many educated unemployed youths in the constituency, who need support and guidance to be able to stand on their own feet,†Chyne said.
