Congress in Meghalaya excited over Rahul Gandhi becoming party president

Shillong, Nov 30: The Congress in Meghalaya is overjoyed in supporting the candidature of Congress vice-president, Rahul Gandhi for the post of president.

At president, his mother, Sonia Gandhi is the Congress president.

Meghalaya, chief minister, Mukul Sangma told reporters that 10 delegates of the Congress from the state would leave for New Delhi on December 4 to support the nominee of Rahul Gandhi as party president.

“It is a long awaited development and we are looking as another moment that will unfold and in continuation of history that we have seen in the past. I personally on behalf of the party from the state, is waiting with great joy to see him as Congress president.” He said.

On Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president, D.D. Lapang decision not to contest the upcoming Assembly polls from Nongpoh, the chief minister said that Lapang has not retired from active politics. As he only decided not to contest the elections from Nongpoh.

“With age, he (Lapang) wanted to be relieved and continue to lead the party in the state as president. There is nothing new because we have had many veteran legislators in the past who decided not to contest,” Mukul said.

Whether Lapang would also replaced as President of the MPCC , Mukul said, “whether there is something or not, we will not share with you. There is no presumption or assumption.”
