Controversy surrounds voters’ list for election of Raid Shabong chief

Shillong, Oct 20: Discrepancies were detected in the list of voters for the election of new Sordar (chief) of Raid Shabong as there were voters whose names appeared in two polling booths.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Khasi Students’ Union South Central East Circle (SCEC) president, Ennocent Khongstia said Khongstia that according to Para 9 (1) of the Saw Raid Act, 1997,each voter shall be entitled to one vote only and shall cast his vote in person. Voting by proxy shall not be allowed.

The election to the post of Sordar will be held on November 11, and three candidates – Biggest Lyngdoh, Kaleptor Khongdup and Jeffree Khonglam have filed their nominations.

Raid Shabong in Riwar Mihngi, East Khasi Hills district, looks after 14 villages with 4,024 voters. At least 12 voters have their names registered in more than one polling booth.

Even the contestant for the post of Sordar, Jeffree Khonglam his name was registered in two places at Pynter and Nongshyrngan.

“At Pynter, the name was registered as J.S. Jeffree Khonglam without showing parents name while at Nongshyrngan the name was mentioned as Jeffree Khonglam and the parents name was Fly Khongwar,” the KSU leader said.

Similarly, the name of Sambor Khongbuh appeared that he is the voter of both Pynursla bad Mawpran. Khongbuh is also the son of the candidate, Kaleptor Khongdup.

Further, the name Imaya Khongbuh was recorded as voter of Mawpran, and at Pynursla, the name was registered as Immaialang Khongbuh and is the brother in-law of Kaleptor Khongdup.

Other voters whose names appeared in two places include, Samuel Khongbuh (at Pynursla) and at Siatbakon, it appeared by the name Samuel Khongbuh Masar, by claiming that he was the Secretary Dong Pynursla, and Chairman of Siatbakon Dorbar.

Names like Premus Tynsong and Premus Tangsong appeared both at Pynter and Nongshyrngan, Serian Tangsong and Serian Tynsong appeared at Pynter and Nongshyrngan, Anjelus Nongkrot and Anjilus Nongkrot appeared at Pynter and Nongshyrngan, Pyndapborlang Khonglam appeared both at Pynursla and Pynter, Bikes Tangsong appeared at Pynter and Nongshyrngan, Hima Khongtiang appeared at Pynter and Nongshyrngan, Rikober Tangsong and Rikober Tyngsong appeared at Nongshyrngan and Pynter, and the name Dominik Massar appeared both at Pynter and Pynursla.

Meanwhile the KSU has demanded that candidates and voters whose name was registered in more than one place should be disqualified, and asked the Chairman of the Election Committee, Hilarius Pyngrope to revise and correct the voters’ list by writing the names of their parents, and on the voting day, voters should bring EPIC and birth certificate as prove so that the election for the post of Sordar can be conductred smoothly and peacefully.
