Shillong, May 25: The state government on Monday discussed the modalities for re-opening of two major commercial hubs – Ãewduh and Khyndai Lad – in the state capital.
After the review meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that a decision could not be taken as the government is still seeking reports from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) as well as the Syiem of Hima Mylliem on the matter.
“We will take a final decision on re-opening of two markets to ensure economic activities resume in Shillong,†he said.
The discussion was held after the government has received requests for opening up of the two markets, which have remained closed for the past two months due to the national lockdown to combat against COVID-19 pandemic.
On the opposition from some quarters against this move, the deputy CM however said people has to understand that it is important to restart economic activities at these two commercial hubs as many traders and business establishments have suffered due to the present closure.
“Moreover, the state has been battling against this contagious disease for the past two months and I don’t believe that people will not know how to protect themselves despite the protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the government from time to time,†he said.
Even if the government decided to re-open these two markets, Tynsong said, it is the responsibility of each and every citizen to take precautions to prevent and protect themselves from the disease.
“This is not a battle to be fought by the government alone,” he said.
