HFU selects 300 members of 1st Meghalaya Famers Parliament

Shillong, Nov 27: The Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU), through various Blocks in Khasi and Jaiñtia has selected 300 members of the 1st Meghalaya Famers Parliament and these members will represent to the Assembly to be held in Shillong on December 4.

General Secretary of the Union, Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew has urged all members to join the gathering at National Dorbar Hall on December 1 for the confirmation of all selected members. The confirmation will be administered by the President of the Union, Commander Shangpliang.

The session is similar to the Assembly session of MLA Parliament session of MPs in which members of the Farmers Parliament will raise questions and initiate discussions on various issues concerning the farmers.

Officials from the state agriculture department and other line departments will also take part in the session.

Meanwhile Kharsyntiew urged all the members to start preparing questions and submit to him by November 29 as the same has to be forwarded to the government so that it can prepare the answers.

Last week, leaders of the HFU, Shangpliang and Kharsyntiew had met Barak Granot, the Counselor head of Economics and Trade Mission of the Embassy of Israel, and Counselor International Development, Dan Alluf at Meghalaya House, New Delhi. During the meeting ways and means how to uplift agriculture in Meghalaya were discussed especially Israel’s help in providing technology and how to market agricultural and horticultural produces such as orange, pine apple and others produced by farmers in Meghalaya.

Barak Granot expressed his willingness to help farmers of the state and ready to work together with the Meghalaya government.

Granot also invited leaders of the HFU to visit Israel in order to get first hand information about the methods of farming being adopted in Israel.
