KSU asks NEHU: Is University for its students or for the paramilitary forces?

Shillong, Apr 8: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has strongly opposed the decision of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) authority to yet again provide accommodation to paramilitary personnel in the campus.

KSU-NEHU unit president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet in a statement issued here said this act of giving accommodation to paramilitary forces by the University’s administrator as nothing but harassment towards the students of the university.

“Bonafide students of the university have been barred from entering the campus if they failed to present their Identity Cards (IDs) to these personnel. Even the staff who don’t have the IDs had to face the same kind of situation,” Sanmiet said.

The student leader also recalled that in the year 2014, the then Pro Vice Chancellor of the University Prof B Marboh had assured not to grant any accommodation to any security forces.

“However, the university’s administrator has regurgitate the assent that was given earlier by militarized the university with these paramilitary forces,” he said.

Sanmiet further criticized the NEHU authority for its failure to address the problem of hostel accommodation faced by the students but instead is giving accommodation to paramilitary personnel.

“The question that arises is this university designated for its students or for the paramilitary forces?” he asked.

Asked, the president of the KSU NEHU unit informed that the Union would be sitting for a meeting on Wednesday to take a decision on this regard.
