Shillong, Nov 27: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has opposed the alleged move of the school managing committee of Laban Bengalee Girls Higher Secondary School to extend the service of the incumbent principal, who is retiring next month.
A delegation of KSU led by its education secretary Readyon Stone Nongrum has also sought the intervention of the Higher & Technical Education Minister Roshan Warjri, who assured them that she would look into the matter after it was brought to her knowledge.
Nongrum informed in a statement that the union also met the School Education and Literacy (DSEL) director, Ambrose C Marak to apprise him of the decision taken by the SMC.
“We have conveyed our strong objection against such extension of service beyond retirement age,” he said.
On hearing the objection raised by the KSU, the director assured to look into the matter whenever such resolution if any is brought to for the approval before the office.
Nongrum said that the ground of opposition was that if the services of teachers are extended even after their retirement, it shall deprive the promotion of other teachers who are eligible as per rule.
“This will also block the opportunity of job aspirants from applying for the post which may arise in the school after retirement of teachers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the KSU is contemplating to meet Minister for School Education and Literacy, Deborah Marak and raise the issue before her.
