Leader of Opposition blames CAA’s fallout for violence at Ichamati, Shillong

Shillong Feb 29: Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma said that the ugly turn of events which resulted in nasty communal violence and loss of precious lives was the fallout of the “unacceptable and divisive” Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

“I am deeply pained to see the ugly turn of events resulting in nasty communal violence and loss of precious life of one of our potential young men and injury to many in our state as fallout of the unacceptable, divisive CAA and condemn the incident and perpetrators of the crime,” Sangma said in a statement.

Stating that the nation is in turmoil because of the mistrust and hatred generated by the intent and the foreseeable fallout of the CAA, Sangma said, “It is only a strong indication of the justification of the demand to repeal of this divisive act (CAA). We are deeply concerned on the situation unfolding following Friday’s ugly incident, and urge upon every citizen to help restoration of peace in the state.”

He also said that the state government’s failure to prevent the ugly turn of events is highly condemnable and it must wake up and deal with the situation appropriately.

Meanwhile the CSWO expressed concern over the incident at Ichamati on Friday which led to the death of a youth and many others injured in a clash between the KSU and some non tribals and attacks on non tribals in Shillong.

“Violence in the State is strongly condemned and the organization demands that the Government should initiate an inquiry as to what brought to taking away lives and injuring many people in Shella and Shillong. The society cannot live in fear and a Government has to ensure safety of all the people living in the State,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said.

After the incident at Ichamati village on Friday, miscreants assaulted and stabbed many non-indigenous people including small traders at ïewduh in Shillong on Saturday.

One of the injured succumbed to injuries and nine other people were injured.
