Shillong, Oct 29: The Meghalaya government will hold consultations with stakeholders on the need to conduct municipal elections in Shillong.

The Shillong Municipal Board has 27 wards, and attempts have been made in the past to hold the elections.

Spokesperson of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government and Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told reporters after the cabinet meeting that on November 17, 1998, elections were conducted in just five wards out of 27.

He also said that on November 25, 2000, the elections were to be conducted but the same could not be held because there was only one nomination.

“Since the issue is sensitive, the cabinet has decided to entrust the Urban Affairs department to do its homework by holding consultations with various stakeholders and then present a report to the government. The Urban Affairs department will hold the consultations in each and every ward,” Tynsong said.

He also said that the exercise should complete at the earliest.
