Shillong Nov 22: The Meghalaya government has informed the Governor, Tathagata Roy about the political situation in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) which saw the defeat of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)-led Executive Committee by just one vote, and the election of a new Chief Executive Member (CEM) with the presence of only one side.

The political situation in KHADC took a new turn all of a sudden when the opposition Congress moved a no confidence motion, which led to the collapse of the UDA-led Executive Committee on November 20 after KHADC chairman, Pynshngaiñlang N Syiem voted in favour of the no confidence motion.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the UDA delegation has expressed that the situation in KHADC would create instability especially when both sides are in a tie of 14-14.

The KHADC has 29 members at present including the Chairman.

“I feel that this instability will continue in the KHADC if both sides are 14-14 as the House at present is having only 29 members due to the passing away of one member. Under this circumstance, even if the new Executive Committee is formed, I do not know how they will pass the financial bills since there is a tie between the two sides and you will again have problem,” he said.

Stating that the present trend will not be good whether for the KHADC, JHADC or GHADC, Tynsong said, “If this is the situation, we clearly understand that it will surely create instability and this will lead to formation of too many Executive Committees.”

Whether the state government will recommend for Administrator’s Rule in KHADC, Tynsong said, “we have already shared and discussed with the Governor, and we have already sent papers to him to decide on this.”

To another query if the situation in KHADC is fit case for imposing Administrator’s Rule. Tynsong reiterated, “I already told you that appropriate recommendation has been made to the Governor. We have sent our recommendation last night (Thursday).”
