Meghalaya Govt may end agreement with GVK EMRI

Shillong, Aug 7: The Meghalaya government has threatened to terminate the agreement (MoU) signed with the GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) to run the ‘108 Emergency Response Service’ in Meghalaya.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Health Minister AL Hek said a meeting was convened to discuss on the matter yesterday after GVK EMRI and its staff have shifted the ball to the government’s court.

“We have decided to discontinue the service of the GVK EMRI if it is not capable of running the emergency service smoothly,” he said.

Asked, Hek said if it (EMRI) cannot, the government may sign new MoU with other organizations who are efficient to run the emergency service.

“The government is only giving contract and has no role in the affairs of the management body as to who they appoint and how they manage things,” he said.

The minister informed that the government has found that the staff are not happy with the management body alleging that it has failed to pay salary to them as per minimum wage as mandated by the Labour Act.

Although there is a technical issue to this, Hek however said the government’s concern is only to ensure the emergency service to the people is not disrupted and if the EMRI cannot resolve the matter, the government will be left with no option but to terminate the agreement.
