Shillong , Feb 13: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) R Chandranathan to cause an inquiry into the alleged high-handedness and violation of human rights by police officers in two separate incidents of assault at Shillong and Tura last year.

The Commission has taken cognizance of the complaints filed by an excise employee and a musician against police officers of the state.

Manovon Massar, a musician from Shillong, has lodged a complaint against SP (Traffic) Bashan J Laloo for allegedly assaulting and violating his human rights on December 19, last year.

Similarly, a complaint was also filed by Mancheng D Marak, an employee of the Excise department against Babul Roy and five other police officers of West Garo Hills District for misusing their power, threat to life, unlawful detention and false fabrication of evidence.

The Commission said it has taken cognizance of the two cases after having carefully perused the facts as narrated by them in the complaint petitions.

Passing two separate orders, MHRC member, PJP Hannaman directed the DGP to institute an inquiry into the allegations made by the complainants and the inquiry for the two incidents of assault should be headed by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) and the detailed report of the inquiry into the two cases should be submitted within 30 days.

The Commission has fixed the next hearing for both the cases on March 18.
