Mondal remains as Speaker after Opposition withdraws resolution

Shillong, Dec 8: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, A.T. Mondal on Friday announced the decision of the opposition National People’s Party (NPP) to withdraw the resolution to remove him.

The resolution to remove the Speaker was earlier submitted by NPP legislator, James K. Sangma.

Withdrawal of the resolution by the NPP MLA was announced by Mondal in the House on the first day of the winter session of the Assembly that began here on Friday.

Mondal said that James who had submitted the resolution, had withdrawn the same on Thursday evening.

It was the third time that the Opposition had moved the resolution for removing Mondal from the Speaker’s post.

With the resolution having been withdrawn, Mondal continued to remain as Speaker.

Mondal, who was elected from Phulbari constituency on Congress ticket in the 2013 Assembly polls, was elected to post of Speaker in 2013.
