Shillong, Oct 30: The opposition Congress on Tuesday alleged failure of the MDA government to restore normalcy in the state capital after the May 31 incident at Them ïew Mawlong “because of its incompetence” in handling the issue.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said that the issue has been mishandled by the present government.

“The road at Them ïew Mawlong is yet to be opened till now as barricade are still being put up which has led to dislocation of the normal movement of people and traffic. This indicates the government’s failure to restore peace and normalcy. Are they so incompetent that they cannot deal with these kinds of challenges that confront the government?” he said.

Stating that any government of the day will be confronted by challenges, he said that the government and leaders were expected to be able to deal and overcome those challenges and restore normalcy.

It may be mentioned that the high level committee was constituted by the government following the violent protest which erupted at Motphran and Mawkhar area and lasted for five days where protesters demand shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.

The violent agitation started following an exchange of words between a bus driver and a lady residing at Them ïew Mawlong on May 31 morning over the parking of a bus.

The altercation that led to the assault of the driver and two other persons by some men in the area, caused a volatile situation since May 31 night as unruly mob clashed with security personnel and demanded shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
