Over 200 schools to have additional classrooms

Shillong, Apr 6: The Meghalaya government would build additional classrooms in over 200 schools across the state while assuring that recruitment of teachers would be conducted based on teacher-pupil ratio, keeping in mind the need to ensure quality education in the state.

Replying to the debate on the governor’s address in Assembly here on Friday, chief minister, Conrad K. Sangma said, 150 schools, apart from 100 schools in Garo Hills will get additional classrooms.

Referring to poor performance of students in SSLC examination, he also talked about introduction of smart classroom in some schools and inculcate among the students interest in science and mathematics.

Stating that the government will do its part, the chief minister also urged students and parents to also do their part.

Asserting the importance of quality education, Conrad said necessary steps will be taken to ensure all teachers are trained within the timeline fixed by the central government.

On the issue of provincialisation the services of teachers in deficit schools, he said that the government had expressed its inability to do so due to financial constrains while pointing out that over Rs 1,000 crore is spent for education sector alone and still it is not enough.

“We are trying our best but the burden will be very heavy on the state’s exchequer. However we are in the process of consultation and we will do our best to resolve this issue,” he assured while adding that the government in future will try to provide financial assistance to more schools.

On the demand for establishing of government college in every district of the state, the chief minister however said that the matter will be examined based on the availability of funds.

Moreover, he informed that the government has asked the task force committee to examine the education policy and submit its report within a period of three months, upon which it will accordingly be placed on public domain for views and suggestions from stakeholders.
