Police want Medical Board to decide on hospitalization of accused persons

Shillong, Aug 20: Concerned over the delay to complete investigation of cases, the state police have requested the state health department to constitute a Medical Board to verify the health condition of accused persons who allegedly tried to take the refuge of hospital in order to delay the investigation.

East Khasi Hills District SP, Davis NR Marak told reporters on Monday that a request was made to the health department to form a medical board which will comprise of a host of doctors and medical experts for examining the health condition of any accused who was admitted in hospital especially after getting admitted for more than 7 days.

“It has been noticed that in recent times, a lot of people have taken the refuge of hospitals in order to escape police custody and avoid thorough interrogation by police,” he said.

He said that if the medical board is formed, then the board can determine whether an accused person needs to be hospitalized or not, especially those who has been admitted for more than 7 days.

“As the medical board comprises of a group of doctors, they will examine everything and accordingly certify if the ailment suffered by the accused person is genuine or not,” he said.

Citing a number of cases where accused persons tried to avoid interrogation after their arrest, Marak said that such delay hamper the investigation process.

Recently, a MC S officer who was arrested by police and booked as the main accused in connection with the petrol bomb attack on the Meghalaya Public Service Commission office was arrested but police could not interrogate him as he was hospitalized.

The MCS officer, Grandwill Harly Passah, surrendered before the police on July 25 but he was hospitalized soon after his arrested.

Marak said that police could interrogate Passah till today.

The SP said that police are yet to establish the ‘motive’ behind the attack on the room of the MPSC secretary, WAM Booth.

On July 10, two unidentified persons went to the office of the MPSC and lobbed a petrol bomb in the room of the Booth which damaged important documents, computers.

Four other persons have been arrested including one, who was paid to hire two others to lob a petrol bomb.
