Shillong, August 5: In a significant step to uplift the lives of small traders, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has disbursed financial support of ₹10,000 each to street vendors across the state. The grant, distributed under the “Chief Minister’s Relief for Street Vendors” scheme, aims to assist vendors struggling with rising prices, inadequate vending infrastructure, and other livelihood challenges.

The distribution was carried out in Shillong by Urban Affairs Minister Bah Sniawbhalang Dhar and Tourism & Arts and Culture Minister Bah Paul Lyngdoh, during a brief event at Iew Khyndai Lad. The ministers acknowledged the vital role of street vendors in the local economy and encouraged them to invest the funds wisely to enhance their livelihoods.

Bah Dhar urged vendors to view the grant not just as relief but as a catalyst to improve their economic standing and contribute meaningfully to society. Paul Lyngdoh echoed the sentiment, stating that the support reflects the government’s recognition of the hard work and financial contribution of street vendors.

Both leaders expressed gratitude to MUDA (Meghalaya Urban Development Authority) and the Urban Affairs Department for implementing the scheme efficiently. The MDA government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the state’s indigenous and underprivileged citizens through such targeted welfare initiatives.
