Shillong, Oct 21: In a major anti-narcotics operation, the East Khasi Hills District Police, in collaboration with the District Administration, Forest Department, Excise Department, and the State Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), destroyed approximately 10 tonnes of illegally cultivated cannabis (ganja) spread over 5 hectares of land at Laitlulong, Sohiong, officials confirmed.

The multi-departmental team systematically uprooted and destroyed the cannabis plants across the entire area. The seized contraband was disposed of on-site through controlled burning, ensuring complete elimination in strict adherence to established legal and environmental protocols.

Officials stated that the operation reflects the authorities’ zero-tolerance stance on narcotics-related activities and their continued efforts to combat drug cultivation and trafficking in the state.

The district administration has reiterated that the cultivation of cannabis is a punishable offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in such illegal activities.
