Shillong, Nov 23: Seng Khasi on Sunday marked the 125th anniversary of Seng Kut Snem with solemnity, pride, and a renewed call for the preservation of the indigenous faith, culture, and identity of the Khasi people.
Observed annually as a celebration of the Khasi traditional faith, Seng Kut Snem commemorates the historic Seng Khasi Movement, founded on August 23, 1899, by sixteen visionary Khasi youths determined to protect their ancient religion, rich culture, and unique language amid the sweeping influence of British administration and Christian missionary expansion.
Procession and Cultural Display
The day began with a vibrant and symbolic procession from Madan Iewrynghep to Weiking Ground, Jaiaw, where thousands of men, women, and youth—dressed in traditional attire—participated with devotion and pride. The colourful march showcased the diverse expressions of Khasi culture through folk music, traditional dances, and tableaux depicting the community’s simple yet profound way of life.
At the Weiking Ground, special prayers were offered, accompanied by cultural performances that highlighted the enduring spirit of the movement and the significance of Khasi heritage.
Message from Seng Khasi Kmie
Addressing the gathering, Rangbah Paia Baskhem Synrem, Assistant General Secretary of Seng Khasi Kmie, said that all units and circles had been urged to take part wholeheartedly in the historic occasion.
“We are happy that today we are able to stand firm as a community. The message from Seng Khasi to each and every one is to uphold the dignity, heritage, and traditions of our people,” he said.
Urging the community to safeguard and strengthen its cultural legacy, Synrem reminded the gathering that the responsibility to carry the heritage forward lies with every individual.
On Modern Influences and Social Media
Responding to queries about social media and cultural erosion, Synrem acknowledged the inevitability of technology.
“We cannot do away with social media or the technologies that exist today. But our advice is that these tools should be used wisely and for the benefit of society. They should not be misused,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of proper conduct, especially among the youth.
“In our society, we sometimes witness behaviour or dressing that does not reflect well on our culture. We encourage families to guide the younger generation to conduct themselves respectfully, because their actions represent the image of the entire community across the world,” he added.
Honouring the Pioneers
Reflecting on the sixteen youths who founded Seng Khasi 126 years ago, Synrem expressed deep gratitude for their foresight and resilience.
“It is because of them that we are able to celebrate this day. All credit goes to the founders. We hope to continue their mission and carry the movement forward for the next 25, 50, or even 100 years—and into the future,” he said.
With 125 years behind it, Seng Khasi reaffirmed that its mission remains unchanged—to uphold the guiding principles of ‘Tip Briew Tip Blei’ and ‘Kamai ia ka Hok’, and to continue preserving the essence of Khasi identity for generations to come.
