Shillong, Jul 1: Customs sleuths on Saturday seized a total of 1,520kg of ganja (cannabis) from an empty truck along the Shillong bypass highway.
The truck (BR01-GB-8195) while moving on the highway was intercepted at Diengpasoh village near the toll plaza on the highway.
Munil Rai (35) the driver, and Arvind Rai (24) the helper were detained and the truck has been seized. But later, Arvind was admitted in Shillong civil hospital after complaining of vomiting.
The seizure of Ganja on Saturday is the biggest so far this year.
The ganja was packed in 93 packets and each packet weighed about 16.4kg. In total, the quantity of 93 packets is 1,520kg worth around Rs.2.28 crore.
This year, the seizure of cannabis has been made in the last two months.
Deputy commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Northeast Region, Shillong, Isaac Kharkongor said that so far, eight cases have been detected, more than 5,000kg worth around Rs 7.5 crore was seized.
Besides ganja, he said that other narcotics including heroin were also seized in the state by Customs.
