Shillong, Oct 24: The 1st All Shillong Interschool Swimming Championship 2025, organised by True North Fitness Centre and Swimming Academy, began today at the academy’s indoor heated pool in Lapalang.
The two-day event has drawn over 155 students from 25 schools across Shillong, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and community support as friends, families, and well-wishers turned up to cheer the young swimmers.
The opening ceremony was graced by Keith Syiemlieh, the senior-most member of the True North Centre, who formally flagged off the championship.
Day 1 saw spirited competition among leading schools, including St Edmund’s, St Anthony’s, Assam Rifles Public School (Sports), Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Girls’ HS School, Seven Set School, Pine Mount School, Loreto Convent, and others.
A total of 26 events were held today, featuring popular races such as the 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, and the challenging 200m individual medley, for both boys and girls. Participants were grouped into age categories — 18–20, 15–17, 13–14, 11–12, and 9–10 years. The heats took place in the morning, followed by the finals in the afternoon.
Medals for the day’s winners were presented in the evening by four distinguished guests — Kishore Subba, senior member of the Meghalaya Swimming Association; Aubrey Laloo, proprietor of Body Zoo Gym and pioneer of professional bodybuilding in Shillong; and two youth achievers, Rifiness Warjri, the youngest Meghalayan to summit Mt Everest, and Bonafilia Shullai, member of India’s U-17 women’s national football team.
The championship will continue on Day 2 from 10 a.m., with Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim, Editor of The Shillong Times, scheduled to grace the closing ceremony as the chief guest.
