Shillong, Sept 8: Two more persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the operation of fake call centres in Shillong city.
Police on Friday said, they have arrested Dawanemi Lyngdoh, 23, of Ladmuthlong-Lumbyrdi and Minot Khongkai, 25, of Amlarem-Padu in West Jaiñtia Hills district.
“With the arrest of these two, a total of 11 persons have been arrested so far,” the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Davis N.R. Marak, said.
Last month, the police arrested nine persons here after raids on three alleged fake call centres – IFA Enterprise, BPO Zurich and Dasanbha Enterprise.
According to police, callers from these fake call centres would call people in the US posing as officials of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), United States, to extort money from them online in the name of default tax payment,
. They would gather details of US citizens from websites, pose as IRS agents and threaten customers to make payments/buy gift coupons for default tax payment or face jail sentence.
When asked if the alleged fake call centres in Shillong have links with the countrywide IRS call centres scam allegedly run by Sagar Thakkar, Marak said investigation is on to check if the call centres have such links with Thakkar, who was arrested in Mumbai in April this year.
Thakkar, alias Shaggy, is alleged to be the kingpin of the IRS call centre scam which defrauded thousands of Americans.
Marak said that a special investigation team was set up for further investigation into the scam.
