Shillong, August 26, 2025 – The Meghalaya Cabinet, during its retreat at Courtyard by Marriott, approved a series of reforms and service-related decisions, including the absorption of Border Wing Home Guards into the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma informed that 708 permanent posts of Border Wing Home Guards will now be subsumed under the SDRF, in compliance with an earlier High Court ruling that directed the government to treat the appointees as permanent employees. Since these personnel are now permanent, they are no longer eligible for the Government of India’s voluntary personal fund scheme, which is meant only for part-time volunteers. By shifting them to the SDRF, the state government will take over responsibility for their salaries. The move will also create 708 vacant volunteer posts in the Border Wing, which can be filled with new recruits eligible for central funding. The Chief Minister added that the government will put safeguards in place to prevent similar complications in the future.Defense
