26 persons charge-sheeted for attacking social activist, Agnes Kharshiing, Amita Sangma

As many as 26 persons have been charge-sheeted by police for their alleged involvement in the brutal attack on social activist, Agnes Kharshiing and her aide Amita Sangma in East Jaiñtia Hills district on November 8 last year.

East Jaiñtia Hills District Dy Superintendent of Police, Gilbert AL Marshillong in his affidavit filed before the Meghalaya High Court on March 20, five of 26 accused have been charge sheeted as “absconders” as they evaded arrest and did not submit themselves before the Court.

He informed that the investigation has been completed, and the charge sheet has been submitted for commission of offences punishable under Sections 307/392/326/34 IPC before the District Magistrate (Judicial) Khliehriat, East Jaiñtia Hills District.

Marshillong, who is also the Investigating Officer, said that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) report is awaited as the DNA profiling, comparison of victims and the exhibits that is the weapons of accused used for committing the offence.

“Once the report is received, the same will be filed by way of supplementary charge sheet and to that extent, leave has been sought from the Court for its production during the trial,” he said.

According to the affidavit, 34 persons have been cited and listed as prosecution witnesses whose names have not been disclosed so as to prevent any influence or threat or coercion to them.

The matter was also taken up for hearing on Friday. In his order, Chief Justice, Mohammad Yaqoob Mir said, “The object of this petition in effect has been achieved, proceedings to be closed after CFSL report is filed before the court of competent jurisdiction (trial court).”

The next hearing will be held after three weeks.
