Shillong June 3: In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025, the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), East Khasi Hills District, in collaboration with the District Administration, District Sports Office, and the East Khasi Hills District Athletics Association, successfully organized a 5K Run on 3rd June 2025 under the banner of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
The event aimed to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse and to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle, especially among the youth.
The programme commenced with an introductory address by Smti E. Kharchandy, District Social Welfare Officer, who welcomed all dignitaries and participants. She emphasized the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and highlighted the critical role of community engagement, particularly that of young people, in eradicating substance abuse.
Smti P. K. Sangma (MCS), Deputy Commissioner in-Charge, East Khasi Hills District, delivered the Guest of Honour remarks, underlining the importance of sustained awareness efforts, collective responsibility, and proactive youth involvement in fighting drug abuse.
A pledge-taking ceremony was then conducted, led by the Deputy Commissioner in-Charge, wherein participants committed to abstaining from drug use and to advocating for a drug-free society.
Following the ceremony, the Deputy Commissioner in-Charge flagged off the 5K Run at 7:00 AM. The run saw spirited participation from students, youth organizations, NGOs, athletes, and the general public. Anti-drug slogans, banners, and placards lined the route, reinforcing the event’s core message of promoting a drug-free community.
The successful conduct of the event stands as a testament to the district’s collective commitment to combating drug abuse and fostering a healthier future for all.
