Shillong, Aug 7: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) claimed to have detected over 80 labourers and business people from outside who worked and operated their businesses without labour license, work permit and trading license.

This was found after a two-day checking conducted by the enforcement officials of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the FKJGP Upper Shillong Circle and FKJGP Lai Shnong Area Unit on August 3 and August 6 at Upper Shillong.

“We have detected over 80 business people and labourers from outside who are operating without trading license, labour license and work permit,” FKJGP Lai Shnong Area Unit general secretary, Shahbok Langstieh said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

He said that the surprise checkings were conducted in various shops, restaurants, guest houses and building constructions in and around the Upper Shillong area from 6th Mile up to Mylliem.

“There are shops, restaurants and guest houses owned by non-tribal business people and which are being operated without obtaining any trading license from the district council were also closed down during the checkings,” Langstieh said.

He said that the organization was surprise to find that people from outside the state did not respect the provisions of the laws implemented by both the state government and district council.

“We also warned those who are trying to shield such migrants,” he said.

On the other hand, the FKJGP Upper Shillong Circle questioned the role of the labour inspectors appointed by the state government.

“The labour inspectors who are empowered to implement the provisions law (to check on illegal migrant labourers) seemed to be just mere spectators,” he said.

The FKJGP would soon meet the state government to demand for stringent measures to check the entry of migrants and take action against erring labour inspectors who fail to do their duty.

“What is the point in paying salary to people who are not doing their duties? Checking of illegal migrants into the state was often conducted by members of various organizations,” the FKJGP said.
