Shillong Aug 25: The ashes of former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee were immersed in the Umshyrpi river here on Saturday monring.
The urn containing the ashes of the former Prime Minister reached Shillong on Thursday and it was kept at the BJP office, Oakland.
Before the immersion ceremony, the urn was taken in a vehicle from the BJP office at Oakland and the procession for the ‘Asthi Kalash Yatra’ passed through Raj Bhavan road, IGP point, Rhino and Rilbong point.
As they marched, the BJP leaders and workers chanted the slogan “Jab Tak Suraj Chand Rahega, Atal Ji Ka Naam Rahega (Till the sun and moon stay, so will Vajpayee).â€
BJP leaders including national spokesperson, Nalin S. Kohli, BJP MLA and health minister, A. L. Hek and other state party leaders and functionaries joined the procession from the BJP office till Umshyrpi river.
On reaching the bank of Umshyrpi river, BJP Meghalaya unit president, Shibun Lyngdoh led the immersion of the ashes.
