NPP yet to discuss on candidates for Lok Sabha polls from Shillong and Tura

Shillong, Oct 23: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is unlikely to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from both Shillong and Tura Parliamentary seats.

“Different people have different views.  But as a party, we have not taken such a stand to field candidates from both seats,” NPP state president, WR Kharlukhi said.

Shillong is being represented by the Congress leader, Vincent H Pala to the Lok Sabha. The Tura Lok Sabha seat has no MP after NPP national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma resigned as Lok Sabha MP after he was elected as MLA from South Tura constituency.

Kharlukhi said that the party would soon discuss the proposal of the UDP to have common candidates in both Shillong and Tura seats.

“We will also be sitting together as an MDA,” he said.

The UDP had put a condition that a nominee of the NPP should be the common candidate of the MDA from Tura, and the UDP candidate should be the common candidate from Shillong.

But Kharlukhi said that the UDP has not such a condition.

“We have not met as MDA and there is no such condition from the UDP,” he said.

Asked if resentment would occur in the MDA as the BJP and other parties are planning to contest the Lok Sabha polls, the NPP state president said, “allegations are only media reports. People can speculate but there is no such thing.”
