Shillong Feb 11: The United Democratic Party said that it would be a difficult situation if all coalition partners fight against each other in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The UDP, which is the main ally of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government made this statement after the recent resolution adopted by the National People’s Party (NPP) that it would contest all the 25 parliamentary seats in the North Eastern Region including Meghalaya.
The UDP had earlier suggested the NPP to consider contesting only from Tura parliamentary seat while allowing it to contest the Shillong seat. The UDP has already announced the name of former MLA from Nongthymmai, Jemino Mawthoh as the official candidate of the party.
When asked, UDP senior working president Bindo M Lanong said, “I have called up our president Donkupar Roy and I had referred to him about the news report that we have to sit and discuss on this regard. So we will discuss on this matter.â€
“We will try our best because if you would like to defeat the Congress or the BJP, we need to have positive mind and that the spirit of give and take should be there,†Lanong said adding, “If all of us fight against each other, it will put us in difficult situation.â€
On the other hand, UDP vice president Allantry F Dkhar said that the last agreement was each party will propose their own candidate then the MDA will sit and decide who among these proposed candidates, is the best to be the MDA candidate.
Stating that everybody is busy with the upcoming district council polls, Dkhar said the party will take up this matter related to the MP elections after the council polls.
The MDA comprises of six political parties which include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, the UDP leaders refused to comment on whether the decision of the coalition partners to fight against each other will affect stability of the MDA-led state government.
