Shillong Apr 9: Campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls ended in Meghalaya on Tuesday amid inclement weather which hampered the last and final wooing of the voters by candidates in both Shillong and Tura Parliamentary constituencies.
Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha constituencies will go to polls in the first phase simultaneously with the bye election to Selsella Assembly constituency on Thursday.
“There was report of intermittent showers in many places besides cyclonic storm in certain areas in Garo Hills,†Chief Electoral Officer, F.R. Kharkongor said.
Kharkongor said that the state machineries were prepared in view of the inclement weather and instructions have been issued to ensure adequate cover of Electronic Voting Machines.
Candidates in both Shillong and Tura constituencies and Selsella Assembly seat held meetings on the last final day of the campaign.
In Shillong there are six candidates who include sitting Congress Lok Sabha member, Vincent H. Pala, BJP candidate, Sanbor Shullai, UDP’s Jemino Mawthoh and three Independents – T.H.S. Bonney, Romeo Phira Ranee and Samuel Hashah.
In Tura, former Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma of the Congress, former Union Minister, Agatha K. Sangma of the NPP and Rikman G. Momin of the BJP.
