Shillong, July 5: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that a proposal to amend the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016 is to make this law more or less like an Inner Line Permit, and the political department and the home department are still on the job.

The MRSSA was passed by the Meghalaya Assembly in 2016 as part of an initiative of the state government to come up with comprehensive mechanisms to check influx and illegal immigration into the state.

Tynsong on Friday said the political department and the home department have been on the job and very soon they will complete the exercise to bring certain amendments into the MRSSA, 2016.

“Once completed, the proposed amendments would be placed before the Cabinet for consideration,” he said.

On the earlier decision of the State government to pass an ordinance, Tynsong said that it is for the Cabinet to decide whether it is necessary to have an Ordinance.

“If the session of the Assembly will be held soon, we may not have to go for an ordinance,” he said.

The Supreme Court in its recent judgment had dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that challenged certain sections of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 which gave unbridled power to a State to prescribe ILP.

Referring to the judgment, Tynsong said that the ruling of the Apex Court would further strengthen the state to protect the indigenous people.
