Two border haats to become operational from next month

Shillong Aug 20: Two border haats will become operational by next month in Meghalaya.

Speaking at the the bilateral meeting for cluster-9 between the bordering districts of Meghalaya and Bangladesh on Tuesday, Additional Chief Secretary, R V. Suchiang said that the border haats which are being set up at Bholaganj and Ryngku in East Khasi Hills district would become operational by September and another one at Nolikata in South West Khasi Hills district would become operational by December this year.

Currently, four border haats are operational along the India-Bangladesh border.

During 2011-2012, two border haats were operationalised at Kalaichar in South West Garo Hills district and Balat in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

Another two are at Srinagar and Kamalasagar in Tripura.

Suchiang informed that border haats at Huroi in East Jaiñtia Hills district and Dalu in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya were still pending.

There is also a proposal to set up an integrated check-post (ICP) at two strategic locations — Shella in East Khasi Hills district and Borsora in South West Khasi Hills district.
