Shillong, Sept 02: Another meeting between the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and some groups to discuss on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution will be held next week.
According to a letter sent by the Secretary to the Executive Committee of the KHADC to various groups, the next meeting will be held at the conference hall of the KHADC here on September 5 at 11 am.
Earlier, the meeting was held on August 29 between the KHADC and groups like the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP).
The meeting has decided to ask the State government to take back views and opinions already sent to the Central government on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule.
KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pynshngaiñlang N. Syiem had said that the meeting had resolved to ask the State government to take back its views submitted to the Centre since it was submitted without consulting with different stakeholders of the state.
“Views and opinions should be submitted to the Centre on proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule in line with the Annexed Agreement signed between the Government of India and the erstwhile 25 Khasi states,” Syiem had said.
He also felt before submitting views and suggestions to the Centre on the proposed amendment, the State government should have taken on board various stakeholders including the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the state.
Meghalaya has three ADCs – KHADC, JHADC and GHADC – created under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
