Shillong, 4th June 2025: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday officially launched Meghalinor, Meghalaya’s first sailing yacht, at the scenic Umiam Lake. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Commissioner & Secretary for Tourism Vijay Kumar D, and Tourism Director C V Diengdoh attended the event.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister highlighted the convergence of Tourism and Sports through this initiative, emphasizing its role in fostering livelihood and employment, especially for the youth. “With nearly 50% of the population under 20, we must lay the right foundations for their future,” he stated.

He underscored the untapped potential of Umiam Lake. He outlined plans for its development, including water sports, infrastructure upgrades, and transforming the area into a premier resort destination in Eastern India. Sangma also praised the state’s recent achievements in kayaking and canoeing at the National Games and expressed hope that Umiam could evolve into a hub for water sports in Meghalaya.

“This launch is just the beginning,” he said, envisioning Meghalinor as a stepping stone toward enhancing tourism and sporting opportunities in the region.
