Shillong, 13 June 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today launched the District Nutrition Challenge during a two-day District Nutrition Leadership Workshop held in Shillong, emphasizing the need for departmental convergence and a clear, purpose-driven approach to sustainable and inclusive human development.

Organized by the Human Development Council (HDC), the workshop aims to empower districts to define and pursue localized targets to improve key nutrition indicators. These include promoting exclusive breastfeeding, reducing anemia, and advancing community-based local food solutions.

“We often work tirelessly day and night, but without a clear goal, we end up achieving very little,” the Chief Minister said in his keynote address. “That is why setting defined, measurable goals is crucial. The District Nutrition Challenge is not just about numbers – it is about purpose, impact, and improving the lives of our people, especially mothers and children.”

Underscoring the state government’s vision for inclusive growth, the Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s commitment to achieving a 10 billion USD economy, stressing that development must translate into real social equity.

“It’s not just about 10 billion or 10 opportunities—it’s about converting these numbers into equity, into tangible social good. That is the real purpose of governance,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of people-centric governance, Conrad K. Sangma cited the CM Connect initiative as a model for administrative outreach. “Through CM Connect, I have been able to meet and listen to our people directly. It is not an event—it is a way of governance. I urge officials to create more such platforms like DC Connect and BDO Connect to bring the administration closer to the grassroots,” he added.

The Chief Minister called for a collective shift in mindset and approach among departments. “We know the challenges. What we now need is clearly defined action—who will do what, how it will be done, and by when. Let us stop working in silos and start working with a shared vision and accountability.”

The workshop was attended by key members of the state cabinet, including Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Community & Rural Development Minister A. T. Mondal, Health Minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, and Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, along with district officials and stakeholders from across Meghalaya.

The District Nutrition Challenge represents a pivotal step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. It reinforces Meghalaya’s resolve to build a healthier, more equitable future for all its citizens.
