Laitarted, Nongthliew, July 17, 2025: In a landmark moment of historical and cultural significance, a 24-foot statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the revered freedom fighter of the Khasi Hills, was unveiled at Laitarted, Nongthliew, on the occasion of his 190th death anniversary. The event was organized by the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) and also marked the 11th anniversary of the organization.

The ceremonial unveiling was carried out by Dr. K. M. Syiemlieh, Deputy Chief of Hima Nongkhlaw, who praised the HYC for its outstanding initiative. The occasion was also deeply symbolic as it coincided with the 500th anniversary of the erstwhile Hima Khatsawphra, now known as Hima Nongkhlaw.

“This is not merely a statue—it is a symbol of the enduring spirit of our people and a call to protect our identity,” said Dr. Syiemlieh. “Let the patriotic legacy of U Tirot Sing guide our resolve to defend our community in all spheres of life.”

A Monument for Future Generations
In his keynote address, HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the indigenous people of Meghalaya. He acknowledged the pivotal contributions of former HYC leaders Peter Lawai and Robert June Kharjahrin, whose efforts laid the foundation for achievements such as the erection of this iconic monument.

“This statue stands tall not just in height, but in spirit. It will remind future generations of the sacrifice, bravery, and resistance that shaped our identity,” said Synrem.

Artists and Sculptors Honoured
The day’s ceremony included felicitations for the individuals behind the artistic creation of the monument. Dr. Syiemlieh was honored by HYC President Synrem, while Vice President Donboklang Kharlyngdoh felicitated renowned artist Raphael Warjri and his team of sculptors, including Banteilang Hynniewta and Ritonwell Sutong, along with apprentices Ialissing Mawrie, Banjop Leo Kharmalki, and Ban Mawrie.

The team received high praise for their craftsmanship and dedication in sculpting the 24-foot-tall figure, which now stands as a proud landmark at Laitarted.

Book Launch and Cultural Showcase
As part of the unveiling ceremony, a pictorial booklet on the freedom struggle of U Tirot Sing Syiem and his comrades was released. The event also witnessed the launch of “Khasi Folk Democracy,” a book authored by Raphael Warjri, exploring traditional democratic values rooted in Khasi culture and resistance.

The celebration concluded with vibrant cultural performances by local folk artists and groups, including Snow White, Khmih Creative Society, Thunder Cave, and Akbar Nongdhar and party, adding a festive and inspiring spirit to the historic occasion.
