Jowai, West Jaintia Hills, Aug 13: The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Community College (DDUCC), Wahiajer, concluded a six-day Livestock Development Training Programme in Poultry & Piggery Farming on Wednesday. Held from August 7–13, the programme offered practical, hands-on training aimed at smallholders and rural youth to boost skills and farm productivity.
Key modules included breed and housing management tailored to Meghalaya’s conditions, locally sourced feed formulation, vaccination and biosecurity measures, and marketing strategies such as collective input purchases and market linkages.
Speaking at the closing session, Dr. Pynhunlang Blah War, Deputy Director (Planning), Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, urged participants to combine indigenous breeds with improved husbandry, enforce strict biosecurity, and leverage cooperatives and state schemes to scale operations sustainably.
Trainees participated in live demonstrations on brooding, pig pen sanitation, vaccination techniques, and farm record-keeping. By the end, each participant had a personalised action plan, a farm biosecurity checklist, and direct contact points for technical follow-up.
The training aligns with Meghalaya’s push to promote poultry and piggery as key livelihood drivers, supported by credit-linked schemes and entrepreneurship development initiatives to help farmers move from subsistence to profitable enterprises.
