On 26th August 2025, a delegation comprising Shri Chakram D. Sangma, Vice President of the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU), North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus; Shri Cheran Momin, Social Activist and Adviser of the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO); and Shri Tengku M. Marak, Advocate at the High Court of Meghalaya, met His Excellency the Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya at Raj Bhavan, Shillong.
The meeting, which lasted for over an hour, focused on pressing concerns related to governance, student welfare, and regional development in Garo Hills. The Hon’ble Governor heard the delegation patiently and provided significant assurances on each matter raised.

- GHADC Funds
The delegation raised the issue of delays in the release of funds for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). The Governor assured personal intervention, stating that statutory funds must not face arbitrary delays. He also said that the possibility of establishing a dedicated Finance Commission for Autonomous District Councils will be examined to ensure transparency and financial discipline. - Safeguarding Garo Customary Law
Concerns were voiced about the erosion of Garo customary practices. The Governor reassured the delegation of full support to preserve and strengthen Garo customary law while harmonising it with constitutional values. He highlighted the ongoing work of a committee under GHADC on this issue. - Mendipathar College Governance
The delegation reported allegations of irregularities and political interference in Mendipathar College. The Governor assured that the matter would be examined carefully and that principles of justice, fairness, and transparency would guide any intervention. - Border Fencing on the Indo-Bangladesh Frontier
On the contentious border fencing issue, the Governor informed that the Government is reviewing disputed stretches and will ensure fair compensation to affected villagers. He assured that approximately 45 km of fencing would be prioritised in the next phase, balancing national security with community welfare. - NEHU Tura Campus Funding
The delegation expressed concern over declining allocations to NEHU’s Tura Campus. The Governor assured that he would take up the matter with relevant authorities to ensure parity in funding and facilities with the Shillong Campus, affirming that students in Garo Hills deserve equal opportunities.

The meeting was historic in bringing together student representatives, civil society leaders, and the legal fraternity before the highest constitutional authority in the state. The Governor’s responses reflected empathy, seriousness, and commitment to action, providing reassurance to the people of Garo Hills.
