Shillong, Aug 31: North East Zone’s batters produced a gritty performance to secure a hard-fought draw against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025 quarterfinal match that concluded in Bengaluru today.
Central Zone dominated with scores of 532/4 declared and 331/7 declared, while NE Zone were bundled out for 185 in the first innings. However, the Northeastern side showed remarkable resilience in their second innings, finishing on 200/6 at stumps. Despite the spirited fightback, Central Zone advanced to the semifinals on the strength of their first-innings lead.
Three Meghalayans — batter Arpit Bhatewara, fast bowler Akash Kumar Choudhary, and spinner Aryan Borah — were part of the 15-member NE Zone squad. Among them, Akash made it to the playing XI and impressed with the ball, taking four wickets in the match (2/103 in the first innings and 2/44 in the second), the best figures among NE Zone bowlers.
Following the historic result, Leishangthem Ronel Singh, Honorary Secretary of the Manipur Cricket Association and Convenor of the North East Zone selection committee, issued a congratulatory message co-signed by Meghalaya Cricket Association President Naba Bhattacharjee and Honorary Secretary Rayonald Kharkamni.
“I extend my heartiest congratulations to the entire North East Zone team, along with the coach and support staff, for their commendable performance against the formidable Central Zone team, featuring several national and international players,” Singh stated.
Central Zone’s squad included India internationals Kuldeep Yadav and Deepak Chahar, along with IPL star Harsh Dubey, adding weight to NE Zone’s spirited display.
“Although the match concluded in a draw, it will be remembered as a historic milestone for North East cricket. Our boys displayed remarkable progress, grit and resilience, playing till the final ball with a true do-or-die spirit. This result stands as one of the finest performances by the North East Zone in recent years,” Singh added.
He further credited the office bearers, officials and selectors of the North East cricket associations for their role in nurturing talent and building professionalism, while stressing the need for continued focus on grassroots development, infrastructure and talent grooming.
