Shillong, Meghalaya: Residents of over 60 villages under Gasuapara Block in South Garo Hills have voiced strong concerns over the poor quality and incomplete construction of the Dagandagre–Rongchonggre road via Rongronggre, Atabenga, and Wagebokgre. The project, sanctioned under the PWD Baghmara N.H. Division with an estimated cost of ₹3.37 crore, is facing allegations of negligence and substandard work.
Local social activist Clinton R. Marak alleged that contractors engaged in the project have compromised construction quality by using low-grade materials, resulting in premature damage to several newly built stretches. Cracks, potholes, and uneven surfaces have already appeared, posing serious risks to commuters and villagers who rely on this crucial route to connect with National Highway-62.
“The quality of road construction is abysmal. It is clear that shortcuts are being taken in the material process so that contractors can maximize profit. This puts the lives of villagers at risk,” Marak said, adding that misuse of government funds for such poor-quality projects is unacceptable.
Residents have also pointed to prolonged delays and slow processing of roadwork, leaving several projects unfinished and severely affecting connectivity.
“It is unacceptable that projects remain incomplete due to slow processing and contractor negligence,” said a concerned villager. “Our safety and well-being should be a top priority, and it is imperative that action is taken immediately.”
Marak has appealed to the authorities to take strict action against malpractice, enforce stringent quality control standards, and ensure that roads are built to withstand heavy rains and harsh weather conditions in the region.
