Shillong, Sept. 26: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has a new Chief Executive Member (CEM) following the sudden resignation of Bah Shemborlang Rynjah of the Voice of the People Party (VPP). Acting on a recommendation from the Department of District Council Affairs, the State Government sought and obtained the Governor’s approval for Bah Winstone Tony Lyngdoh, MDC from Nongthymmai constituency, to succeed Rynjah.
Speaking to media persons, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong clarified that the process was conducted as per procedure and not limited to any single party. He emphasized that consultations with the Leader of the Opposition were also necessary and that approval was granted based on the KHADC chairman’s recommendation. Tynsong added that Rynjah would serve as caretaker CEM until the election is formally conducted.
The Governor’s approval was subsequently forwarded, and Bah Winstone Tony Lyngdoh officially assumed office today.
Rynjah’s resignation on September 25, 2025, came as a surprise to many in Khasi Hills, marking a significant moment for the VPP, which has been at the helm of KHADC for seven years. While the decision shocked many residents, they expressed hope for a smooth transition, noting Rynjah’s record of integrity and public service.
According to a KHADC office notification, elections for the new CEM are scheduled for September 30, 2025. Candidates must submit their nominations by 11 AM on September 29 at the KHADC office.
With Rynjah stepping down from the Executive Committee, the VPP has nominated Bah Denzil Raynard Chen, MDC from Jaiaw–Mawprem constituency, to join the new EC under Lyngdoh’s leadership. KHADC Chairman Bah Strong Pillar Jana confirmed that the election will take place during a Special Session, with all MDCs — including members of the opposition — participating.
