Shillong, September 29, 2025: The Meghalaya Police has formally launched its first Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), marking a significant step in strengthening the State’s internal security architecture. The specialized unit, modeled on the National Security Guard (NSG), is aimed at countering terrorism, insurgency, and violent crimes.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, and Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, inaugurated the new squad at the Police Headquarters in Shillong.
The ATS Meghalaya will initially comprise 50 personnel drawn from the State’s elite SF10 Commando Unit. These commandos have undergone intensive training to handle counter-terror and hostage situations, bringing Meghalaya in line with other states that already maintain dedicated ATS units. The decision to operationalize the squad follows directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
DGP Nongrang, along with senior officers including DIG Eastern Range Dr. D.N.R. Marak, played a pivotal role in setting up the unit, which is expected to enhance the State’s preparedness against extremist threats along its border regions and within urban centers.
Alongside the ATS launch, the Chief Minister flagged off 12 DFS Crime Scene Vehicles—one for each district—and introduced two major digital policing initiatives:
MEGPOL – an advanced research and analytical tool for intelligence and investigation support.
PIMS (Personnel Information Management System) – a digitized platform to streamline management of police personnel records.
The initiatives are part of Meghalaya Police’s broader strategy to modernize its force, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the State’s law-and-order capabilities.
