Shillong, October 2: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday said the government is working on long-term measures to ease traffic congestion in Shillong while ensuring optimal use of underutilized land for development projects.
Addressing the media, Sangma said the state plans to develop multi-purpose commercial complexes that will house hotels, shops for local entrepreneurs, and facilities for youth to generate livelihood opportunities.
“We are looking at a mix – hotels, shops for small entrepreneurs, and spaces for local people – so that youngsters can create value and livelihood. The idea is to enhance the overall commercial potential,” the Chief Minister said.
On traffic congestion, he admitted that while ambitious projects like a metro system or cable cars are desirable, they are currently constrained by financial and space limitations. Instead, the government will prioritize practical solutions such as creating more parking lots and expanding roads where possible.
“We need to decongest our roads first. Parking lots will ensure vehicles are off the roadside, allowing smoother traffic flow, and pedestrian zones can also be developed,” Sangma explained.
He further informed that discussions are ongoing with the Assembly Secretariat, and once the new Assembly building is completed, the existing premises could be repurposed for road expansion, parking facilities, and dedicated taxi lanes.
