Mawtnum, Ri-Bhoi | October 2, 2025 – To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and mark the nationwide campaigns Swachhata Hi Seva and Swachhotsava, the Dorbar Shnong Mawtnum, Ri-Bhoi District, in collaboration with Saindur Enviro Pvt. Ltd., Shillong, organized a community-wide cleaning drive in the village on Thursday.
The programme witnessed the enthusiastic participation of nearly 150 community members, including children, youth, and elders, reflecting Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of cleanliness as an essential foundation of a healthy society.
The event began with a welcome address by Shri K. Nongmalieh, Secretary of the Dorbar Shnong Mawtnum, who highlighted the importance of collective action in preserving a clean environment.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vivek Kumar, Director of Saindur Enviro Pvt. Ltd., lauded the active involvement of the villagers and emphasized that cleanliness is a shared responsibility. “When each of us contributes through small steps, together we can bring about a big change. It is our country, our environment, and our responsibility,” he said.
Dr. Kumar also stressed the dangers posed by single-use plastics, noting that they pollute rivers, harm ecosystems, and remain in the soil for thousands of years. He reminded participants of the nationwide ban on single-use plastics notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and urged the adoption of compostable and eco-friendly alternatives. He further extended appreciation to Dorbar Headman Shri B. H. Nongmalieh, Secretary Shri K. Nongmalieh, and Executive Committee member Shri R. R. Makdoh, along with all villagers, for their wholehearted support.
In his remarks, Shri B. H. Nongmalieh, Headman of Mawtnum, expressed gratitude to Saindur Enviro Pvt. Ltd. for backing the initiative. He praised the community’s united participation across all age groups and highlighted the villagers’ commitment to sustainability and cleanliness.
The programme concluded with a renewed pledge by both the Dorbar Shnong Mawtnum and Saindur Enviro Pvt. Ltd. to continue joint efforts in promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and environmental responsibility within the village and beyond.
