Shillong, October 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Umsohpieng, as the Chief Guest in a ceremony attended by dignitaries, officials, and members of the public.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister reflected on Meghalaya’s progress over the past seven and a half years, highlighting the Government’s focus on welfare, infrastructure, and human resource development.
He shared that Meghalaya is now the second fastest-growing economy in the country after Tamil Nadu, recording an average annual growth of 10% over the past three years. He also emphasized the Government’s significant investment in education, noting that ₹3,654 crore has been allocated to the sector, along with grants-in-aid and other forms of support.
The Chief Minister spoke about ongoing reforms in the education system, including the introduction of a structured salary system for ad hoc and SSA teachers, aimed at strengthening the sector over the next two decades and ensuring effective delivery of education.
Emphasizing youth development, he urged parents, teachers, and communities to guide young people towards constructive pursuits such as sports, music, entrepreneurship, and social initiatives.
During the event, he announced a contribution from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund to provide musical instruments to the students of Sijun Memorial School and Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, underscoring the role of music in brain development and nurturing creativity.
He concluded his speech by congratulating the School Managing Committee, teachers, parents, and students for their dedication to education.
Meanwhile, Guest of Honour Shri Methodius Dkhar, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister for gracing the occasion. He highlighted the importance of the new school building as a major achievement for the constituency and the local community.
He also recalled the contributions of former leaders, including (L) D. D. Lapang and (L) P. A. Sangma, whose vision and commitment laid the foundation for the institution’s growth.
Other dignitaries present included Shri Remington Gabil Momin, MLA of Rambrai–Jyrngam Constituency, Shri Lurshai Kharbani, local MDC, and several government officials and community representatives.
Earlier, Rev. A. Nongbri, President of the School Managing Committee, welcomed the dignitaries and shared the school’s vision of providing quality education that fosters academic excellence, creativity, and character development.
The Secretary of the Managing Committee, Rev. S. B. Lyngdoh, presented an overview of the school’s journey, recalling its humble beginnings and the support it has received from both the Government and the community. He highlighted the recent funding and construction of the new school building and outlined future plans, including RCC fencing, recruitment of additional teachers, and the construction of hostels, particularly for girls.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with cultural performances by the students.
